Section: Dressing for the Occasion - Blog
Support meetings - think funerals, wakes or religious services - have rigid dress codes, but while you don't have to be decked out in all black, your attire must convey respect. You should wear dark, unobtrusive clothing so as not to spoil the occasion for others. Here's some guidelines to help you make the best choices.
Your goal is for your clothing and behaviour to convey a sense of encouragement and respect.Never draw attention to yourself by either your speech or attire because it may be perceived as inappropriate behaviour and could convey an impression of disrespect.
The sole purpose of such meetings is to provide support; thus, your only role is to offer comfort, strength and consolation to others.
Dress simply and conservatively. You want to blend in with the crowd because you are there for your friends in need. Do not overdress for these occasions; instead, opt for clothes liketailor made suits to signal the earnestness of your support and your solidarity.
On the other hand, don't dress down too much either; this is not the time for ripped jeans or flip flops.
Avoid bold colours at funerals. In fact, it is customary to wear dark coloured men's suits. These should be paired with the appropriate dark coloured garments and accessories. However, if you do not own a suit, any dark coloured and respectable outfit will be apposite.
When attending religious services, ask a member of the congregation about the standard of dress for their meetings. This helps you fit in with the other parishioners - whether they're dressed formally or casually. Always err on the side of caution by overdressing rather than underdressing.
You'll always be suitable attired when wearing classic conservative colours and patterns for normal religious services. For special occasions like Easter Sunday, opt for the pastel colours of spring. Wear linen business shirts, jackets and trousers for summer services.
