New year’s resolutions, the bane of every man’s existence and the sole reason January is often considered the most depressing of months. Why we set our sights so high is one of those unexplainable mysteries of life. So with that in mind, we decided that we wouldn’t be laying down the gauntlet of losing a few inches around the midriff or telling you to fill your wardrobe with enough finery to put Liberace to shame. No, we decided to set you some simple and achievable goals that will help make you the sartorially savvy gent you always knew you were.
Sit down, open your laptop, and start reading up on the latest news in the world of men’s formal wear. With all the information there is out there right at your fingertips there is quite literally no excuse to make schoolboy errors when suiting up. Find a few reputable blogs – like this one – and spend an hour or two every weekend following the experts as they guide you through the dos and don’ts of menswear. You’ll be surprised at how much you’ll learn and how easy most of it is to implement.
We love flamboyance in all its guises but in men’s formal wear simplicity is the first step to success. There may come a time in the future when you might be able to pull off that rhinestone studded dinner jacket but for now, we’d advise you to stick to simple style techniques that you know will work. Like we said, follow the experts and you’ll have a reasonably good idea of how far you can go without overstepping the invisible line between style and bad taste.
Yes, we want you to invest in quality but no, we don’t want you to overspend on unnecessary items. While many a thrifty soul will baulk at the price of a custom tailored suit, the initial outlay of such fine clothing could be remarkably less than the amount you will spend on off the rack suits in the next few years. A well-made suit should last you a lifetime and if your tailor is worth his salt, its style should be timeless. Aim to have one custom made suit in your style arsenal by February.
Now while we did say to keep things simple, we’re loath to suggest that you should stick to your outdated guns. However, we’re not yet asking you to grab that rhinestone dinner jacket just yet. What we are suggesting here is that you break from your norm. If button down collar shirts are your thing then why not try a club or spread collar? If monochrome is how you usually roll into the office, then add a bit of colour with a pocket square. Such small changes can completely change a look yet are still firmly in the ‘keep it simple’ bracket.
Above all else we advise you not to pay too much attention to the countless articles and social media posts that implore you to eat less while working out to within an inch of your life. Exercise and healthy eating are of course essential, but so too is happiness. Whatever makes you happy just keep doing that, just make sure you’re doing it while wearing one of our suits.
Happy New Year from the Montagio team.
