Women know it's all about accessories. Well, most men care as much about the finer details of completing a look – think watches, rings, cufflinks or bracelets – as women do, and many are sporting well-crafted looks. These simple tricks will make you a mix and match master.
In today's tech oriented world with all its high tech gadgets and geeky options, some folks think men's watches are antiquated jewellery. However, in our professional opinion, men's watches are functional gadgets that make fashion statements as well.
We recommend you have at least two watches in your wardrobe:
The general rule? The simpler a watch design is, the more formal it is (as well as more versatile).
For example, simply designed timepieces, with a single set of hands and a leather band, are the most formal watches, and a perfect choice to finish off your tuxedoes or dinner jackets.
For sporty uses, pick digital watches with simple bands. Need a dependable watch for work? For the workplace and other utilitarian purposes, choose larger timepieces with moving hands, gauges and metallic bands.
Wedding rings are appropriate men's accessories. However, if you want to wear other rings, it's your prerogative. Depending on your choice of style, taste and the environment it is worn in, rings can symbolise membership, wealth and even extravagance.
Our professional recommendation is to limit the number of rings to one on each hand so you always maintain high dress standards and look sharp.
French cuff shirts require cufflinks and/or cuff knots. End. Of. Discussion. As a general guideline, you need at least two pairs of cufflinks for each shirt with French cuffs. However, the total number of cufflinks you need will not depend on the number of shirts with French cuffs.
Instead, it depends on whether or not the cufflinks are memorable in their own right. Our logic here? Well, plain silver or gold cufflinks or solid-coloured knots rarely attract attention. Rather, they are viewed as one piece of an overall ensemble.
However, a flashy pair of cufflinks are memorable, thus limiting their use. As you buy cufflinks during your wardrobe building phase, start with simple, timeless designs. Once you own three sets of cufflinks and six sets of cuff knots, indulge yourself with a few opulent cufflinks or knots to add some flair to your outfits.
In many cultures, bracelets symbolise power and position. But most men do not wear bracelets unless they are fashionable men who follow the latest trends. Since the choice to wear or not to wear bracelets depends solely on personal choice, our only professional advice is to wear those plastic charity wristbands only when the cause is one with which you deeply identify.
Sunglasses are typically a utilitarian, rather than a fashionable, men's accessory, but if you are going to wear them, choose a pair to enhance your appearance and do keep them clean. Most men find owning two pairs of sunglasses adequate for their wardrobe needs.
Selection criteria for choosing the right sunglasses?
It's simple, really. Just don't wear sporty, athletic, wrap-around sunglasses with your business suits. They don't play well together, and your appearance will suffer.
High quality sunglasses aren't cheap, but they are more cost effective overall as they often last longer, especially if given good care. We advise you to use a protective case for storing the lenses and non-scratch pads to clean them.
As you can see, matching accessories with your suits is as easy as knowing what to pick and what to avoid. If you like the advice we've given you here, you'll love the way we'll guide you through the process of selecting a custom made garment to match your other accessories.
