It’s a question that continues to pop up each time we have a fitting with a new client. Of course, our customers are well aware that a shirt with a suit must always remain tucked in, but what about casual looks?
Is there a golden rule only a select few are aware of? Or is it just a free for all? Well, here’s what we think on the matter.
Your mum no doubt spent many a day badgering you to tuck in your school shirt, and you probably even got into trouble a few times when the principal saw you. But this ingrained belief a shirt must remain tucked in is not entirely true.
The deciding factor for many is the occasion. If you’re at a funeral, wedding, or the office, then common sense tells us a shirt tail blowing in the breeze is the most heinous and unforgivable of crimes. However, it’s not the occasion that should decide, but rather the shirt you choose.
Shirts that have a straight hem are casual enough you can wear them either tucked or untucked. On the other hand, shirts with a curved hem or a tail are more often than not, the ones that you must tuck in. This is an easy to follow guideline but not a steadfast rule. Be warned there are some obviously casual shirts with curved hems that make a complete mockery of this guideline so use your best judgment.
If your shirt comes down to your knees, then either it’s too big or a nightshirt from bygone days, but either way, overlong shirt needs tucking in. The last thing you want is people to mistake your long untucked shirt for something you mistakenly picked up in the women’s section of your local department store.
Likewise, if your shirt is short in length then it probably doesn’t belong under your waistband. A good indicator here is the ease with which the shirt remains tucked in. If it pops out as soon as you raise your arms above shoulder height, then it’s definitely an outie.
As there are no actual rules for casual attire, the length serves as an ideal decision maker. Short – untucked, long – tucked.
No matter what you are wearing, the most important thing you need to do is to make a decision and stick to it. If you decide a tucked in shirt is the order of the day, then keep it tucked in no matter what.
Pulling a tucked in shirt out halfway through your day does nothing more than give you the appearance of a bedraggled man with no concern for his appearance. Now, don’t misunderstand this. An untucked shirt is acceptable if you wear it like that all day. But when you decide to go from tucked to untucked, people notice, and the look is not a good one.
