Section: Building Your Wardrobe - Blog
Men’s shorts are summer style essentials, a necessary part of any man’s wardrobe building plan. While you must be cautious of when and where you wear them, you needn’t avoid them altogether. Let us help you decipher this portion of the dress code with these tips for choosing the best items to balance out your wardrobe.
According to modern American actor and writer Stanley Tucci, “People wear shorts to the Broadway theatre. There should be a law against that.” While we don't know of any laws prohibiting shorts as proper Broadway attire, we can think of several dress codes this violates.
Most of us prefer to wear occasion appropriate attire because we know how important the first impression is. Having said that, let's talk about when and where it might be okay to wear your shorts.
Men's shorts are considered appropriate attire in Australia more readily than they are in other areas of the world. In most other circumstances, therefore, they are typically viewed as appropriate attire for casual occasions.
Unless you are employed in an unusual occupation (we're thinking crocodile hunting or zoo keeping, perhaps), there is little latitude for wearing shorts to work. When you wear them to work, it should be because you are attending company sponsored sports or water related activities or taking offsite "business trips" to Hamilton Island or other locations.
Look for shorts with roomy hips and hems that hit no more than six inches above the knee. They should never extend beyond the knee, in any circumstance.
Cotton and linen are excellent fabric choices because they are natural fibres with good wicking properties, so you stay cool and comfortable. The safest colour choices are tan and khaki because these versatile neutrals offer a multitude of mix and match combinations.
Be wary of buying white shorts; they may attract undue attention, and they stain easily. It goes without saying swimming trunks should be reserved for swimming or surfing in areas close to the beach i.e. Bondi Beach or Bells Beach etc.
While shorts are probably a minor part of your overall wardrobe scheme, it's a good idea to have a few pairs on hand for those odd social occasions.
