Well-chosen accessories, like a boutonniere, transform a decently dressed man into an extraordinarily dressed gentleman. While most men only wear them with wedding or formal attire, the fashion forward gent knows that perky little flower in his buttonhole is the perfect fashion accessory for almost any outfit.
Master English novelist, William Thackeray, once wrote: “When I walk with you, I feel as if I had a flower in my buttonhole.” Doesn't that speak volumes about the person he was walking with? In a suble way, it also hints at what he considered the perfect accessory for a wedding suit, tuxedo, dinner jacket, or even a business suit.
The simplest, cheapest, least used, and (in our opinion), the perfect accessory for formal wear is a flower. Boutonnieres celebrate life, they have richly storied histories, and best of all, can be found for free on a bright day in spring.
A boutonniere is always worn on the left breast – near the heart. To make the best impression, keep it simple.
As the old quote says: “That man is richest whose pleasures are cheapest.” The boutonniere flower bears testament to this.
As a final note on accessories, remember they add to and enrich the experience when you wear them. In that sense, they resemble the service and the ambience surrounding a fine meal. For example, a man should not surround himself with the finest accessories if his suits and clothing are shabby or improper.
A man who doesn't care about his appearance cannot expect to project a favourable impression merely on the basis of his accessories - appearance is built on the total package, which starts with a good foundation.
