So it’s Friday afternoon and after a long hard week you’ve managed to finish up early enough that you can head out for a well-deserved dram of the drink of the gods, whisky. Yes, the amber nectar that is known as the water of life in both Ireland and Scotland is certainly one of our favourite tipples and we like to think that we know a good whisky when we taste one. So we decided to let you in on some of the best whisky bars we’ve found on our travels around the city.
If you want a taste of both the Irish pub scene and its famous whiskies, then a trip down The Wild Rover is a must. From the moment you walk through the inconspicuous green door, you find yourself magically transported to a drinking den full of character and charm. The feeling of being privileged enough to find this spot and drink from its wonderful array of fine whiskies while tapping your foot to Irish folk songs makes you wonder if you’ve somehow landed yourself in an exclusive drinking club for the select few.
If the American way of life, or more importantly, the way of drinking tickles your fancy then a visit to this saloon. It’s a sawdust on the floor, taxidermy on the wall type of place that might first make you wonder if your tailored business suit is a bit overkill, but once you see the menu of quality drinks on offer you’ll see why we love it. No airs or graces at this place where all are welcome to enjoy the raucous atmosphere.
The best places to drink in Sydney are sometimes the hardest to find and Tokyo Bird is one of these places. Tucked away down a lane, this bar offers the best range of Japanese whiskies in the city all served by sartorially savvy bartenders in their tailored waistcoats. Now, if you know your whisky, then you know that the Japanese make some of the world’s finest. And if you’re of a mind to drop a few dollars then you can sample a few at the higher end of the scale in this wonderful bar.
And finally to the one and only Eau de Vie. This is hands down our favourite of the bunch. The bar has a dedicated whisky club that once you’ve joined allows you a discount on the best bottles behind the bar. It also has some of the chattiest and most knowledgeable staff on the bar circuit. But that’s not all, members also have access to the whisky room where your personal bottle can be stored in a locker and whipped out for those Friday evening drams.
So this Friday, don’t be in too much of a hurry to get home and change out of your business suit, hit one of our top whisky spots and enjoy a few drinks. Heaven knows you probably deserve it, but remember that a whisky is like a good tailored suit; sure it’s an investment that might raise an eyebrow, but it’s one you certainly won’t regret.
